An amazing group of volunteers at our January 2019 event with Global Citizen!

Philadelphia has a great volunteer legacy. And every year around Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the city’s philanthropic-spirit is in full force. For our first event of 2019, we partnered with the organization that puts on a massive volunteer effort - Global Citizen. Anyone who’s organized an event before can tell you volunteers are not only needed on the big day. We spent three hours volunteering with our friends from GC and elsewhere to make sure the rest of Philly’s volunteers would be able to help out on MLK Day in style. Global Citizen & Girard College

According to their website, Global Citizen is a movement of engaged citizens who are using their collective voice to end extreme poverty by 2030. They have created a platform to drive social change and create impact globally around this vision. GC explains it best themselves:

Through our mix of content and events, grassroots organizing and extensive reach through our digital channels, we are building the world’s largest movement for social action. We organize massive global campaigns to amplify the actions of Global Citizens from around the world.

We were fortunate to be hosted by GC at Girard College in Philadelphia’s Francisville neighborhood. Our project was to work alongside nearly 70 volunteers to organize the 30,000 t-shirts Global Citizen will distribute to over 200 projects throughout Philly on MLK Day 2019. Our volunteers unpacked, sorted, and shopped for specific sizes to make sure everyone goes home happy from their volunteer events.

MDA and Cradles to Crayons

Not to be outdone, another group of our volunteers were just down campus in the school’s gymnasium to help two other great causes - the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Cradles to Crayons. Our volunteers also reached the 200 threshold - over 200 cards and letters going out to encourage and comfort those in need!

St. Stephen’s Green

Another extremely successful part of our day - another all-time #Afterjawn at St. Stephen’s Green! We had some great food and drink specials for our volunteers and the perfect “cool friend from high school’s parent’s basement” vibe going. Since we had a pretty big waitlist for our volunteer event, we invited everyone who couldn’t make it to stop by anyway - a friendly reminder that we’re just as much about community as we are about giving back.
