May 2017 event! Philadelphia Community Corps & Evil Genius
Our inaugural Volunteering Untapped PHL event was a exceptional way to start our operations in the city of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection! The first 20 volunteers we've had did an amazing job for our partner organization and then helped welcome a new brewery to Fishtown.
Philadelphia Community Corps
We were proud to partner with fellow Temple University alumnus, Greg Trainor, to assist his team as they ramp up operations for their architectural salvage and workforce development programs. PCC provides career training programs that empower underserved citizens to revitalize blighted neighborhoods by deconstructing vacant buildings and salvaging materials for reuse.
Greg and the team at PCC guided us through removing nails from salvage lumber, removing hinges and knobs from doors (to be sold separately), and we helped lay the foundation for what is now a working carpentry classroom.
PCC now offers volunteer opportunities each and every Saturday - you can find more information on their website, and you can follow them on Instagram too!
Evil Genius Beer Company
Who knew that a brewery known for their insane names ("Trust the Process", "Dude, They Totally Find the Car!", "Every Day I'm Rustlin'") would take sustainability so seriously? That's what the VU Crew learned on their tour of the new Evil Genius Lab in Fishtown. A massive architectural salvage project in its own right, the Lab also utilizes unique heating and cooling solutions to conserve energy and water.
Also, we had LOTS of good beers you guys. Don't think we were studying the whole time!
You can visit Evil Genius online at evilgenius.beer (yes, it really is .beer) and follow them on Instagram.
